Gregory Helms is the longest reigning Cruiserweight Champion in history and the longest reigning champion of any kind in SmackDown! history. Career Gregory Helms World Championship Wrestling Gregory Helms Gregory Helms signed the World Championship Wrestling in 2000, along with his friend Shannon Moore. Gregory Helms has wrestled in many independent promotions, including the Organization of Modern Extreme Grappling Arts (OMEGA) promotion founded by Matt and Jeff Hardy. Gregory Helms found success as WCW Cruiserweight Champion. Gregory Helms was the reigning Cruiserwieght Champion immediately before WCW was bought out by then World Wrestling Federation. Gregory Helms’ contract with WCW was one of twenty-five that were included in WWF's purchase of WCW. WWE Gregory Helms Gregory Helms dropped his middle name “Shane” due to stem confusion that WWF staff thought would be caused from having him and Shane McMahon as active members in the organization. WWE’s Gregory Helms lost his championship at the end of July 2001 to Alliance Member Billy Kidman. SmackDown! Gregory Helms for a short duration from July 2001, was also known as the “Hurricane Helms” and was a regular on then WWF's sister shows WWF Jakked and WWF Heat. Helm’s for a short duration joined hands with Ivory and on August 27, 2001 The Hurricane Character was born. Gregory Helms also won the European championship defeating Matt Hardy. Gregory Helms’ character was loosely based on The Green Lantern; he sports a tattoo of the hero's logo on his right biceps. Originally a heel (via his membership in The Alliance), Helms believed himself to have superhuman powers. He would, for example, wrestle heavyweights and attempt to chokeslam them. Helms was later drafted to SmackDown! following the brand extension, and he won the Cruiserweight Title from Taijri and Kidman in a triple threat match. Later in 2002, he was traded to RAW, won the World Tag Team Titles with Kane, and held them for around a month in an alliance known as Hurri-Kane. Raw On November 7, 2005 edition of RAW, Helms and Rosey faced off in singles action, in what was Rosey's last match in WWE. Helms won the match after hitting the Shining Wizard.[23] Subsequently, Helms wrestled mostly on RAW's sister show, WWE Heat.[24] On WWE.com's Unlimited, Helms talked about his frustrations with not only not being on RAW in recent weeks, but also regarding Jerry "The King" Lawler making comments about him on the December 26, 2005 edition of RAW. Gregory Helm’s won WWE Cruiserweight Championship at the 2006 Royal Rumble. Gregory Helm’s was pitted against Chris Benoit for Champions against Champions Match.Helms returned to the ring on the April 28, 2006 edition of SmackDown!, teaming with MNM to face Paul London, Brian Kendrick and Super Crazy in a six-man tag team competition. Helms continued to defend his belt during PPV's but made more regular appearances on SmackDown!'s sister show, WWE Velocity.
